Advice To Newbie Webmasters (And My Number 1 Pet Hate As A Website Owner)

The other day I realised that the most annoying thing about having a website has to be exchanging links with other webmasters.

Now, I don’t mind most aspects of exchanging links - I enjoy searching for other ‘make money online’ related websites, and contacting them regarding a link exchange. I also enjoy it when people contact me asking for a link exchange (at least when they aren’t running spammy sites, or aren’t simply after a piece of my Page Rank).

My real hate is when you agree to exchange links with someone, and you place your link on your website and they do the same on their website… only for a few months down the line, when you go to check out their website, and your link has mysteriously disappeared. No polite e-mail stating that they will be removing your link, no reasoning behind removing your link, and most annoyingly, the fact that you have been displaying their website link in the belief that they are also doing the same.

I’m not saying that I have a problem with exchanging links with anyone, because I do enjoy exchanging links and do see the benefits from it too, I just dislike it immensly when I find someone removes a link to your website without any kind of explanation. So for anytime that my link has been down, and I have been linking to them, they have been getting a great website backlink. Not only is this doing their own website search engine rankings some wonders, but it will be damaging my own search engine ranking.

My advice to all newbie (and less-experienced webmasters) is to be sure to keep good records of anyone that you exchange links with, and remember to check those websites at set periods, just to check that your link is still online (might be worth checking that they aren’t adding the rel=nofollow command to your link too). I’m sure there is some kind of cron-job that can be set up to do this task for you, but I do not know the full details yet.
